Trial Matcher

M&A · AI Trial Matching · Prague

Connecting patients to clinical trials and oncology centers to one another.

The goal was to build a system usable across multiple sites that connects patients, physicians, and researchers, and ensures that no patient misses the chance to be enrolled in a suitable study. Trial Matcher has two interfaces, each for a different group of users.

For physicians

The system is connected to a simulated hospital information system (NIS) and works directly within the physician’s workflow. While a medical report is being written, the patient is automatically screened against all studies in the database. The database includes studies from FNMH, MÚO, and clinicaltrials.gov, and it can be expanded further. Physicians do not need to search for studies themselves or know their criteria. If the system finds a potential match but information needed for confirmation is missing, it proactively asks follow-up questions or suggests the examinations that need to be completed. The physician thus receives not only a signal that the patient may be eligible, but also a concrete next step.

For researchers

After the study documentation is uploaded, Trial Matcher automatically extracts the eligibility criteria, which can be edited or supplemented. Researchers then follow the progress of the study in a clear interface: they browse and filter patients, and for every claim they can click through to a citation pointing directly to the source text, so they can verify the system’s decisions. Results can be exported to a table.

Bonus: TrialGPT

TrialGPT enables basic data analysis in natural language. Users can ask, for example, for a chart of value distributions or for the number of patients excluded by a specific rule, without having to write queries manually. All data are stored on an InterSystems FHIR server, on top of which structured queries can be built, allowing rapid analysis of large patient cohorts.

Future development

The system is designed to be deployable both within the FNMH NIS and beyond it. We would be glad to collaborate with other oncology clinics to help make the right match between patient and study across institutions.

The LLM can easily be swapped for a locally hosted model.

Had before
Use of AI
- Extrakce strukturovaných dat z lékařských zpráv do formátu FHIR

Impact

Who benefits
Doctors and nurses, Research
InterSystems technologies
